Music runs through Moroccan life, from Gnaoua trance to Andalusian orchestras and village drumming, and two instruments sit at its core: the oud and the darbouka. A music lesson introduces you to both, with a working musician in a riad salon or music room, and turns you from a listener into a (very) beginner player in a single relaxed session — no prior experience or musical background required.

The oud is the star. This pear-shaped, short-necked, fretless lute is the ancestor of the European lute and the foundational melodic instrument of Arab and Moroccan music, its deep, resonant, slightly melancholic voice carrying the maqam modal system on which the music is built. Your teacher shows how it is held and tuned, why the absence of frets allows the microtones that give Arab music its distinctive sound, and guides your fingers through the first notes and a simple, recognisable melody.

The darbouka (also called goblet drum or tbila) brings the rhythm. This single-headed goblet-shaped hand drum produces two main sounds — the deep "dum" struck in the centre and the sharp "tak" at the rim — and from those two strokes come the rich rhythmic cycles that drive Moroccan and Arab music. The teacher breaks down a basic pattern and has you playing along, feeling how melody and rhythm lock together, and depending on the session you may try both instruments or focus on one.

Beyond the playing, the musician opens up the wider tradition — the maqam modes, the Andalusian and chaâbi styles heard at Moroccan celebrations, and how these instruments fit into an ensemble — so you leave hearing the city's music with new ears.
