Private Session with a Master Potter

Overview

Pottery is one of Marrakech's oldest working trades, still centred outside the city walls around Bab Ghmat where wheels turn and kilns fire much as they have for generations. Rather than a shared group class, this is a private one-on-one session with a genuine master potter — undivided attention at the kick-wheel, real instruction in centring and pulling clay, and glazing in the cobalt, green and ochre of classic Moroccan ceramics.

Marrakech's potters have traditionally worked outside the city walls near Bab Ghmat, where the clay, the space for kilns and the smoke from firing were kept apart from the dense Medina. It remains a working craft quarter today, with wheels and wood- or gas-fired kilns turning out the tagines, bowls and vases sold throughout the souks. This session puts you inside one atelier for a genuinely private lesson rather than sharing a wheel and a master's attention among a group.

The instruction starts at the most difficult part of the craft: centring. A lump of clay thrown slightly off-centre on a spinning wheel will fight you for the rest of the process, and getting it dead-centre under your palms — using the foot-powered kick-wheel rather than an electric one, in the traditional way — is a skill that takes real repetition to feel. Your potter works beside you the entire time, hands guiding yours when needed, correcting pressure and angle rather than leaving you to struggle alone as often happens in a larger class.

Once you have thrown a basic form — a bowl or a simple cup is realistic for a first session — the potter shows you the traditional Moroccan glazing palette: the deep cobalt blue and green associated with Marrakech and Fes ceramics, alongside ochre and other earth tones, explaining how mineral glazes behave in the kiln before your piece goes in to fire. Because firing takes time, your finished piece is ready to collect later in your stay, or shipped afterwards if your schedule does not allow a return visit.

Because it is one-on-one, the pace is entirely yours — you can spend the whole session simply trying to centre the clay if that is what interests you, or push through to a finished, glazed piece if you would rather leave with a complete object to show for it. It is a favourite for anyone who wants real skill-building rather than a quick tourist activity, and it doubles as a genuine look inside a working Moroccan craft trade.
