Overview
Behind its red walls, Marrakech is a city of gardens — a tradition of cool, green, water-fed retreats that runs from medieval royal orchards to the artists' paradise of the twentieth century. This tour joins up the best of them, led by the world-famous cobalt blue of the Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent story woven through it.
The centrepiece is the Jardin Majorelle: painter Jacques Majorelle's 1920s garden of bamboo, cacti and lily ponds, painted in the intense 'Majorelle blue' he trademarked, and rescued decades later by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, who made it their Marrakech home. Your guide tells the double story — the painter and the couturier — and points out the Berber Museum and the memorial to YSL, with the option to add the neighbouring YSL Museum.
From there the tour explores the city's other great gardens. The Menara, a serene olive grove around a huge stone irrigation basin with a green-tiled pavilion and the snow-capped Atlas behind it, is Marrakech's postcard. In the medina, Le Jardin Secret restores a grand riad's twin gardens — a formal Islamic char-bagh and an exotic garden — with a tower to climb for rooftop views.
It's a gentler, more contemplative tour than the souks, and a lovely counterpoint to the intensity of the medina. Transport links the gardens, which are spread across the city, and going private lets you swap in the Agdal royal gardens, the Cyber Parc or a stop at a garden café. Bring a camera — this is Marrakech at its most photogenic.

Is the Jardin Majorelle worth visiting?
For most people, yes — the intense cobalt blue, the exotic planting and the Yves Saint Laurent story make it one of Marrakech's signature sights. It's small and can get busy, so go early. A guide adds the layered history of the painter Majorelle and YSL that the garden itself only hints at.
Do I need to book Majorelle tickets in advance?
It's strongly recommended in high season — the garden caps numbers and queues can be long by mid-morning. Booking a timed ticket online, or having your guide arrange it, saves a lot of standing in line. The YSL Museum next door has its own separate ticket.
Can I combine Majorelle with the YSL Museum?
Yes, they're next door to each other and a natural pairing, though each needs its own ticket. There are combined tickets at times. On this tour the YSL Museum is an optional add-on; tell us when booking and we'll build in time and help with tickets.
Which Marrakech gardens are free?
The Menara gardens are free to enter (a small fee applies to the pavilion), and the Koutoubia rose gardens are free. The Jardin Majorelle, YSL Museum and Le Jardin Secret all charge admission. The Agdal royal gardens are free but only open on certain days and closed when the royal family is in residence.
