Summer gets a bad rap in Marrakech, and unfairly so. Yes, July and August are hot — sometimes ferociously — but it's a dry heat, the city empties of crowds, prices soften, and the long warm evenings are magical. Visit with a plan built around the sun and a summer trip can be one of the best-value and most atmospheric times to come.

Plan your day around the sun
The single trick to summer in Marrakech is timing. Do your walking — the souks, monuments, a guided tour — in the cool of the morning, ideally starting soon after breakfast. Retreat indoors or to a shaded courtyard or pool through the blistering midday-to-late-afternoon window, when even locals slow down. Then re-emerge from around 6pm as the heat breaks, for shopping, dinner and the buzz of Jemaa el-Fnaa, which is at its liveliest on warm summer nights.
Stay cool and hydrated
Accommodation matters more in summer than any other season: pick a riad with a plunge pool and shaded courtyard, or a hotel with a proper pool and strong air conditioning, and you'll have a sanctuary for the hottest hours. Drink far more water than feels necessary, wear loose, light, breathable clothing and a hat, use high-SPF sunscreen, and duck into air-conditioned cafés and museums when you need a break. Carry water everywhere and watch for the signs of heat exhaustion, especially with children and older travellers.
Escape the city heat
One of summer's pleasures is how easily you can escape to cooler air. The Ourika Valley and Atlas foothills are several degrees cooler and offer running water and shade an hour away; the Atlantic breeze at Essaouira keeps the coast 10°C cooler than the city.
