Overview
This is the Sahara trip most people mean when they picture Morocco: three days looping over the Atlas to the great golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, with a camel trek into the sand at sunset and a night at a desert camp beneath a canopy of stars. It packs in the south's greatest hits — Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge — around the main event of the dunes. Three days is the sweet spot: enough to do the distance justice without rushing.
Day one crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and the film city of Ouarzazate, then follows the 'Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs' up the Dades Valley to an overnight among its rose-red gorges and rock formations.
Day two winds through the dramatic Todra Gorge, where cliffs soar hundreds of metres over a narrow river, before the long, beautiful run to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you swap the vehicle for a camel and ride into Erg Chebbi as the light turns gold, reaching a desert camp for dinner, drumming around the fire and an unforgettable night under the stars.
Day three begins with sunrise over the dunes — the highlight for many — then a camel ride back, breakfast, and the long drive back to Marrakech over the mountains. It is a lot of driving, but the scenery is constantly spectacular and the dune night is genuinely once-in-a-lifetime. Choose a private tour for flexibility, or a shared minibus for value.

How long is the drive to Merzouga?
Roughly 8–10 hours from Marrakech spread over the first two days, via major sights so it never feels like non-stop driving. Merzouga is too far for a comfortable day trip, which is why the overnight loop is the sensible way to see the big dunes.
What is the desert camp like?
Camps range from standard Berber tents with shared facilities to luxury tents with real beds and en-suite bathrooms. All include dinner, breakfast, blankets and usually music around the fire. You can upgrade to a private or luxury camp when booking.
Will I be cold at night in the Sahara?
Very possibly — desert nights are cold, and from November to February can drop near freezing even when days are warm. Camps provide thick blankets, but bring warm layers, a hat and socks so you enjoy the fire and the stars in comfort.
