Arabic calligraphy is one of the great Islamic art forms, and Morocco has its own distinct hand — the rounded, sweeping Maghrebi script that developed here in the west and looks noticeably different from the angular Kufic or the flowing Naskh and Thuluth of the Middle East. A workshop introduces you to this living tradition with a working calligrapher, usually in a quiet riad salon or a small art studio in the Medina or Gueliz.

You start with the tool itself: the qalam, a reed pen whose nib is cut at a precise angle to create the thick-and-thin strokes that give the script its rhythm. The calligrapher shows how to hold it, load it with ink, and control pressure, then walks you through the basic strokes and letterforms before you attempt joined words. It is meditative, exacting work — closer to drawing than handwriting — and beginners are always welcome.

Along the way the artist explains the culture behind the craft: how calligraphy became central to art because of the tradition of not depicting figures in religious contexts, how phrases and names are composed and balanced, and how the same word can be written in radically different styles. Many workshops let you work toward writing your own name or a short word or phrase of your choice in Arabic.

You leave with your own piece on paper to take home, plus a much sharper eye for the calligraphy you will see everywhere in Marrakech — carved into cedar, tiled into zellige and cut into plaster on the walls of the medersas and mosques. No knowledge of Arabic is needed; the workshop is about the hand and the eye, and the calligrapher guides you at every step.
