About this experience
Argan oil is one of Morocco's signature products, produced nowhere else on earth in any quantity — the argan tree (Argania spinosa) grows almost exclusively in the semi-desert Souss region of southwestern Morocco, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, where goats famously clamber into the branches to reach the fruit. Traditionally the oil is made entirely by hand by rural Amazigh women, and today much of it flows through women's cooperatives that have become an important source of income and independence. This workshop tells that story and puts the process in your hands.
You learn the labour behind every bottle. The argan fruit is dried, the hard nut cracked between two stones to reach the kernels inside — a slow, skilled job done by hand — and the kernels are then ground (roasted first for culinary oil, left raw for cosmetic oil) and pressed. You get to try the famous nut-cracking yourself, which quickly explains why real argan oil is precious and priced accordingly. The host distinguishes the nutty, roasted culinary oil, delicious with bread, from the pure cosmetic oil used on skin and hair.
The hands-on heart of the workshop is making your own natural cosmetics. Using argan oil as the base, you blend products to take home — options often include a savon beldi black soap, a ghassoul clay mask, a lip balm, a body or hair oil scented with rose or orange blossom, or amlou to eat. You learn what each traditional ingredient does and how Moroccan women have used them for skin, hair and hammam rituals for generations.
