Traditional Hammam & Argan Spa Ritual

Overview

The hammam is not a spa treatment bolted onto Moroccan life — it is Moroccan life, a centuries-old ritual of steam, scrub and rest that leaves you softer, lighter and completely unwound. This is the full sequence done in a beautiful setting: warm marble rooms, black-soap gommage, a vigorous exfoliating scrub, and a slow argan-oil massage, closed with mint tea in a quiet lounge. It is the best afternoon you can give your body in Marrakech.

At its heart the hammam is a communal steam bath, and every Moroccan neighbourhood has one. Visitors, though, usually choose a spa hammam — the same ritual in a more private, polished setting, with an attendant to perform it for you. You begin in a warm, humid marble room that opens the pores, then the attendant lathers you head to toe in savon noir, the soft black olive-oil soap that is the ritual's foundation, and leaves it to work in the steam.

Then comes the gommage — the scrub that people talk about for weeks afterwards. Using a coarse kessa glove, the attendant works over your whole body, sloughing away a startling amount of dead skin. It is brisk and thorough rather than painful, and the result is skin so smooth it genuinely surprises first-timers. A warm rinse and a hair wash usually follow, leaving you clean in a way an ordinary shower never manages.

The final act is the massage. Argan oil — pressed from the nuts of the argan tree that grows only in south-west Morocco, and a genuine local product rather than a marketing gimmick — is worked into the skin in a slow, unhurrying massage that eases out the tension of travel and long days exploring. You emerge loose, glowing and slightly floaty.

The ritual closes as every good Moroccan thing does, with mint tea and time to sit. Do not schedule anything demanding afterwards; the whole point is to slow down. Couples can share a private suite, solo travellers are perfectly at ease, and it slots beautifully into an afternoon between souk mornings and rooftop evenings.
