Private Moroccan Chef at Your Riad — a curated experience in Marrakech
Location: Your rented riad or villa in Marrakech
Best time: Any evening; lunch also possible on request

Overview

When you have rented a beautiful riad, the nicest place to eat in Marrakech is often your own courtyard — with someone else doing the cooking. A private chef arrives with the market shopping done, takes over your kitchen, and serves a bespoke Moroccan dinner course by course to your table, then leaves it spotless. It suits a group who want to stay in, a family celebrating together, or a couple who would rather not go out.

This is private dining in the most literal sense: the restaurant comes to you. The chef agrees a menu with you in advance, does the shopping — often at a neighbourhood souk or the sprawling Bab Doukkala market for the freshest produce, herbs and spices — and arrives at your riad ready to cook. All you provide is the kitchen and the table; everything else, from ingredients to the final plate, is handled.

The menu is genuinely bespoke. Fancy a slow-cooked lamb tagine with prunes and toasted almonds, a proper seven-vegetable couscous, a chicken-and-almond pastilla, or a spread of a dozen Moroccan salads to graze over? It is built to your table's appetites and any restrictions — vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, children's tastes — discussed when you book. Because the chef is cooking for your party alone, portions, pace and timing all flex to suit you.

How involved you are is up to you. Some guests treat it as a hands-off dinner and settle in the courtyard with a drink while the smells build; others hover in the kitchen to pick up the trick of folding warqa pastry or balancing the spice in a tagine. Either way the food is served course by course as if in a restaurant, usually to your riad's courtyard, rooftop or salon depending on the weather and the mood.

It is especially good value and atmosphere for a group — a birthday, a family reunion, a villa of friends — where a restaurant booking for eight or ten would mean noise, a fixed menu and a taxi at the end of the night. Here you eat in the place you are already falling in love with, then simply climb the stairs to bed.

Highlights

  • A professional Moroccan chef cooking in your own riad kitchen
  • A bespoke menu built around your tastes, dietary needs and the day's market finds
  • Course-by-course service to your courtyard or rooftop table
  • The option to watch, learn a dish or two, or simply relax and be served
  • The kitchen left clean — you enjoy the meal and none of the washing up

How the experience unfolds

Plan for about About 4 hours. Timings flex with the season and whether you go fully private — here is the usual shape of it:

  1. 16:00

    Market

The chef shops the souk for the freshest produce, meat and spices (behind the scenes).

  2. 18:00

    Arrival

The chef arrives at your riad and takes over the kitchen.

  3. 18:30

    Prep & aperitif

Cooking begins; guests relax with a drink, or join in the kitchen.

  4. 19:30

    Starters

Moroccan salads, briouats or a soup served to your table.

  5. 20:15

    Main course

The signature dish — tagine, couscous or pastilla — brought out.

  6. 21:00

    Dessert & tea

Pastries or a fruit dessert with mint tea.

  7. 21:45

    Clean-up

The chef clears and leaves the kitchen spotless; you carry on the evening.

Good to know

  • You need a rented riad or villa with a usable kitchen — this is not offered in hotel rooms.
  • Confirm your kitchen's equipment when booking; the chef can bring key tools if needed.
  • Agree the menu and any dietary needs a day or two ahead so shopping can be planned.
  • Great for groups — per-head cost falls as numbers rise, unlike a restaurant.
  • Lunch and cooking-lesson formats are available if you prefer a daytime session.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to provide anything?

Just your riad's kitchen, a dining table and, if you want it, your own wine. The chef brings all the ingredients, does the cooking and serving, and cleans the kitchen before leaving. Confirm what equipment your kitchen has when you book.

Can the chef cater to dietary requirements?

Yes — the menu is designed around your party, so vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, nut-free and children's options are all straightforward. Flag any allergies clearly when you agree the menu so the market shopping accounts for them.

Is it a dinner or a cooking lesson?

It can be either. The default is a served dinner, but if you would like to learn, the chef will happily turn it into a hands-on session where you help prepare a dish or two before sitting down to eat. Say which you prefer when booking.

How many people does it work for?

Anywhere from a couple to a full riad of a dozen. It becomes better value per head with larger groups, which is why it is popular for family celebrations and groups of friends sharing a villa.
