Choose the easy version, a luxury camp in the Agafay hills 40 minutes away, or commit to the long, unforgettable haul over the mountains to the Sahara dunes at Zagora or Merzouga. Before you start

The five-day trip is the complete package: city, mountains and desert, with a night away from Marrakech as the centrepiece. Days 1–2 cover the Medina and the modern quarter; Day 3 heads into the Atlas; Days 4–5 are your desert overnight and an easy return.

The big fork is the desert. Agafay is the low-effort, high-comfort option — luxury tented camps, a sunset camel ride, dinner under the stars and back in the city by mid-morning. The Sahara (Zagora is a long day each way; Merzouga's tall dunes are really a two-night commitment) trades convenience for the real thing: Erg Chebbi at sunrise.

If you only have five days, Agafay makes the most sense — you keep a full Atlas day and a relaxed finish. If crossing the mountains to true dunes is the dream, this plan shows how to fold a Zagora-style overnight in without losing the city.

Practical tips

Pack a small overnight bag for camp; leave the rest at your riad.
Desert nights are cold even after hot days — bring a fleece and long layers.
If you crave true tall dunes, know that Merzouga really needs two nights, not one — Zagora or Agafay fit a five-day trip better.
Stack the driving days sensibly: Atlas on Day 3, desert on Day 4, so you're not on the road three days running.
Confirm what your camp provides (bedding, en-suite, dinner) — 'luxury' varies enormously.

Go all-in on dunes

If Erg Chebbi is the dream, extend to a two-night Merzouga tour and trim a city day — the giant dunes are worth it, but they need the time.

Is the Agafay desert a fair substitute for the Sahara?

How cold does the desert get at night?

Surprisingly cold, even after a hot day — think a jumper and long trousers year-round, and a proper jacket in winter. Camps provide blankets, but pack a layer.

What do I do with my luggage during the overnight?

Leave your main bag at your Marrakech riad and take only a small overnight bag to camp. Riads are used to this and will store it securely.
