About this experience

Marrakech is loudest and hottest in the middle of the day, which is exactly why sunrise is the sweet spot for a rooftop practice. Before the souks wake and the heat builds, the Medina rooftops are cool, quiet and washed in soft pink light, with the Koutoubia minaret and, on clear mornings, the snow line of the High Atlas on the horizon. Rolling out a mat up there is one of the calmest things you can do in an otherwise intense city.

The session is a gentle, breath-led flow suited to every level, from complete beginners to regular practitioners. Teachers keep it accessible — grounding, mobility and slow sun salutations rather than anything acrobatic — and adjust to whoever is on the terrace that morning. The dawn adhan (call to prayer) usually sounds partway through, and most teachers pause to let it wash over the practice rather than talk across it.

You practise on the shaded rooftop of a riad or a small yoga guesthouse in the Medina or the calmer Kasbah quarter, with mats and props provided. Because the terrace is private, the mood is unhurried and personal — often only a handful of people. Afterwards the class winds down into stillness as the city fully wakes below you.

The reward comes at the end: mint tea and a slow Moroccan breakfast on the same terrace — msemen and baghrir pancakes, khobz bread, amlou or honey, olives, fruit and coffee. Wear comfortable layers, because rooftops are cool at dawn even in summer, and bring a light cover-up for the walk back through the still-quiet lanes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be flexible or experienced?

Not at all. The flow is gentle and all-levels, built around breath and grounding rather than difficult postures, and the teacher offers easier options throughout so beginners feel comfortable.

What should I wear on a rooftop at dawn?

Comfortable stretchy clothes plus a warm layer, because Medina rooftops are cool before sunrise even in summer. You will shed the layer as you warm up and the sun climbs.

Is breakfast really included?

Yes. The class ends with mint tea and a proper Moroccan breakfast on the terrace — pancakes, bread, honey or amlou, olives and fruit — so you leave nourished, not just stretched.
