The Palmeraie (Palmeraie de Marrakech) is a vast palm grove on the northeastern edge of the city, said to date back to the Almoravid founding of Marrakech and once fed by an underground network of khettara channels. Today it is a patchwork of palms, gardens and estates crossed by sandy paths, and its dromedary (single-humped) camels make it the easiest and closest place to experience a camel ride without heading deep into the desert.

The ride is gentle and requires no experience. A cameleer in traditional dress helps you mount — the camel kneels, you settle onto the saddle blanket, and it rises back to front, the one genuinely lurching moment — then leads the string of camels at a slow, swaying amble along the tracks between the palms. Golden hour is the prime slot: the low sun turns the fronds and dust to amber, the heat of the day has broken, and the light is at its best for photos.

Along the way the cameleer shares a little about the grove, the animals and life on the city's edge, and most rides pause at a Berber-style tent or rest stop for a glass of mint tea. The whole outing is short and unhurried — the ride itself is typically an hour or so — which makes it ideal for families with children, first-timers and anyone who wants the iconic camel experience close to town rather than a long trek.

Because it is right by the city, the Palmeraie ride slots easily into a late afternoon and pairs well with a quad-bike run or a visit to a nearby garden. Wear long trousers for comfort in the saddle, closed shoes for the sand, and a scarf or hat, and bring a little cash for the cameleer. Come as the day cools for the best light and the gentlest heat.
