Palmeraie Cycling Tour — a guided tour in Marrakech
Meeting point: Riad or hotel pickup, or a Palmeraie base
Languages: English, French, Spanish (others on request)
Best for: Active travellers wanting fresh air, open space and easy riding

Overview

Just north-east of the city, the Palmeraie is a vast old palm oasis — tens of thousands of date palms threaded with dirt tracks, olive groves, mudbrick villages and, these days, luxury kasbah hotels. It's flat, open and a world away from the crush of the medina, which makes it perfect for a bike. This half-day tour pedals its quiet lanes at an easy pace, with the open sky and fresh air a real tonic after the souks.

You'll ride mostly on unpaved tracks through the groves, at a relaxed pace that suits any reasonably active rider — the terrain is flat, and the tour is about scenery and fresh air rather than distance or difficulty. Your guide leads you past the landmarks of the oasis: grand kasbah-style hotels behind their walls, working olive and vegetable plots, small villages where life goes on much as it has for generations, and the occasional camel camp set up for visitors.

There's usually a stop for mint tea under the palms — perhaps at a Berber café or a camp — a chance to rest, take photos and hear about the oasis: how the palms are irrigated, how development has crept in around the old agriculture, and what daily life is like on the city's green edge. Some versions add a short camel ride or a village visit; e-bikes can be offered if you'd rather the motor took the effort out of the warmth and the distance.

It's ideal early in the morning or in the late afternoon, out of the midday heat, and works for couples, families and small groups after something active and scenic without being strenuous. Bring sun protection and closed shoes for the dusty tracks. As an easy, breezy contrast to the intensity of the old city, it's one of the more refreshing half-days on offer.

Highlights

  • Riding the Palmeraie's palm groves and quiet dirt tracks
  • Open sky and space just beyond the medina walls
  • Kasbah hotels, olive groves and small villages along the way
  • A mint-tea or camel-camp stop under the palms

The route, step by step

A typical tour runs about Half day (3–4 hours). The order flexes with the season, the crowds and whether you go private or shared — here is the usual shape of it:

  1. 1

    Pickup & bike fitting

Collected from your hotel, then a safety briefing and bike (or e-bike) set-up at the Palmeraie edge.

  2. 2

    Into the palm groves

Ride the flat dirt tracks under the date palms, away from the traffic and crowds.

  3. 3

    Kasbahs & olive groves

Pass grand kasbah hotels, working olive plots and small oasis villages.

  4. 4

    Mint-tea stop

Rest under the palms at a Berber café or camp for tea, photos and the story of the oasis.

  5. 5

    Camel camp (optional)

A short camel ride or a village visit, if you'd like to add one.

  6. 6

    Ride back & drop-off

Loop back to the base and your transfer to your accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Palmeraie cycling tour?

Easy — the Palmeraie is flat, the pace is relaxed, and the ride is about scenery and fresh air rather than distance or effort. Any reasonably active person can manage it, and e-bikes are available if you'd like the motor to take the strain out of the heat. It's a leisure ride, not a workout.

What is the Palmeraie?

It's the large palm oasis on Marrakech's north-eastern edge — historically an irrigated grove of tens of thousands of date palms threaded with tracks, olive plots and villages, and now also home to luxury kasbah hotels. Flat, open and quiet, it's a complete contrast to the walled medina and ideal territory for cycling or a gentle ride.

Can I add a camel ride?

Yes, on many versions — the Palmeraie has camel camps set up for short rides, and one can be built into the tour as an optional add-on alongside a village visit or the mint-tea stop. Tell us when you book if you'd like to include it, and we'll factor in the time and any extra fee.

When is the best time to do the tour?

Early morning or late afternoon, out of the midday heat — the oasis offers little shade on the open tracks and can be very hot in the middle of the day. Cooler hours also give softer light for photos of the palms and kasbahs. Bring sun protection and plenty of water whatever the time.
