The Agafay is not sand — it is a lunar landscape of pale, folded stone hills that rolls south-west from Marrakech towards the snow line of the High Atlas. If you have three days to spare, the Merzouga option swaps the Agafay's stone for the towering apricot dunes of Erg Chebbi on the edge of the true Sahara, an eight-to-nine-hour drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the Dades and Todra gorges. The luxury camps there are just as good, and the sand is unforgettable, but it is a serious journey and best folded into a multi-day desert tour rather than a single overnight.
