Marrakech's greatest spectacle doesn't cost a thing. Long before you pay to enter a single palace, the city gives you its call to prayer, its sunsets, its endless souks and one of the most famous squares on earth — all for free. Here's how to fill a day on nothing.
The square, the souks, the sunset
Make Jemaa el-Fnaa your anchor. By day it's snake charmers and orange-juice carts; at dusk it transforms into a vast open-air theatre of food smoke, gnaoua drummers and storytellers, and watching it fill up costs nothing. Then simply walk into the souks — you don't have to buy anything to enjoy the dyers' lanes, the metal-beaters and the smell of cedar and mint.
Circle the Koutoubia Mosque at golden hour; its gardens are free, open and the best place in the city to watch the light go pink on the minaret. Many of the medina's grand gates and fountains are yours to admire for free too.
Views and green corners for nothing
Marrakech rewards looking up. Most café and riad rooftops let you nurse a mint tea while the whole medina spreads out below — technically the price of a drink, but as close to free as a great view gets. Public gardens and the palm-lined avenues of the Ville Nouvelle cost nothing to stroll.
