Overview
The Tizi n'Tichka is Morocco's best-known mountain crossing, the road that has carried traders, armies and now tour vehicles between Marrakech and the south for centuries in one form or another. At 2,260 metres it is the highest paved pass in North Africa, and a day spent simply driving up, over and back — rather than continuing the long haul to Ouarzazate — gives you the full drama of the road with a more manageable day.
The N9 highway climbs out of the plains through a string of villages before the real ascent begins, switchbacking up terraced valley sides past old kasbah settlements like Irherm n'Ougdal, whose stone towers cling to the slopes much as they have for generations. Roadside stalls selling polished minerals, fossils and geodes — genuine finds from the surrounding mountains alongside imported pieces — line much of the upper route.
At the summit, a small cluster of cafés and viewpoints marks the watershed of the High Atlas, with views back north toward Marrakech's plains and south toward the pre-Saharan landscapes beyond. The pass itself, built from the 1930s onward to replace earlier caravan tracks, remains an engineering feat, threading between peaks that top 3,000 metres nearby.
Rather than pushing on to Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou — a much longer day — this trip treats the pass and its old-road villages as the destination in their own right, with time to stop properly at viewpoints, mineral stalls and kasbah hamlets that a through-drive to the south usually rushes past.
