Close and easy: Agafay
If time is short, the Agafay stone desert is the answer — a wide, lunar landscape just forty minutes from the city. You can do a sunset camel ride and dinner in an evening, or stay out for an overnight camp and still be back for a late breakfast in Marrakech.
Agafay isn't sand-dune Sahara — it's rocky desert — but it delivers the big-sky, silent-camp feeling without the long drive, which is exactly why so many short-trip travellers choose it.
The real Sahara: Zagora & Merzouga
For actual sand dunes you need two days minimum. Zagora is the closer Sahara — a long day or a two-day trip with palm oases and a desert camp. For the postcard dunes, Merzouga and Erg Chebbi are the goal: towering golden dunes best done over three days.
The Merzouga route is one of the great road trips too, crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and passing Aït Ben Haddou on the way — the journey is half the experience.
