Marrakech desert tours: common questions
What is the best desert tour from Marrakech?
For the classic towering dunes, the 3-day Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) tour is the standard and the sweet spot. Short on time? A 2-day Zagora tour reaches real Sahara with less driving. Want a desert night with almost no travel? Stay overnight in the Agafay stone desert, 40 minutes away. For wild, empty dunes, choose Erg Chigaga by 4x4.
How many days do you need for a Sahara desert tour?
Three days is ideal for Merzouga, giving a relaxed loop with the gorges and kasbahs and a proper dune night. Two days works for Zagora or a fast Merzouga dash. Agafay needs just an overnight. Erg Chigaga is best over three to four days because of the remote 4x4 crossing.
Is Merzouga or Zagora better?
Merzouga has the huge, classic Erg Chebbi dunes but needs a longer, driving-heavy trip; Zagora is closer with smaller dunes and a beautiful palm-valley drive, ideal on a tight schedule. It's a trade-off between dune scale and time in the car.
What is a desert camp like?
Camps range from simple Berber tents with shared facilities to luxury 'glamping' with real beds, en-suite bathrooms, pools (in Agafay) and fine dining. All include dinner, breakfast, blankets and usually music around a fire under the stars. You choose the standard when booking.
When is the best time for a desert tour?
Roughly September to May, when daytime heat is bearable. Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer (June–August) is extremely hot in the Sahara, and mid-winter nights can drop near freezing — bring warm layers whenever you go.
