Outdoor Activities Near Marrakech

Marrakech sits in the flats, but the great outdoors is never far: snow-capped peaks to the south, green river valleys within an hour, and open desert to the west. If you'd rather be on a trail than in a souk, here's where to point yourself.

Hike the High Atlas

The mountains are the headline. An Atlas hiking day gets you onto real trails through Berber villages and terraced fields, and the Imlil and Toubkal day takes you to the foot of North Africa's highest peak. Both are guided, so you get the geology and the culture along with the climb.

For a gentler outdoors day, the Three Valleys tour mixes short walks, waterfalls and village tea without the hard climbing — a great option if the group has mixed fitness.

Rivers, saddles and wheels

Water is the summer draw. The Ourika Valley and the Setti Fatma waterfalls give you cool river walks and pools to cool off in, an hour from the heat of the city.

Prefer to be moving? Horse riding through the palm groves and mountain biking in the foothills both get you into the landscape under your own steam, at whatever pace suits you.

Open-desert days

To the west, the Agafay stone desert offers walks, camel rides and camps in a wide-open lunar landscape just forty minutes out — the outdoors at its most cinematic without a long drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go hiking near Marrakech?

Yes — the High Atlas is only about an hour away. You can do a half- or full-day hike through Berber villages and terraced valleys, or head to Imlil at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Guided days include transport from the city and back.

What's the best outdoor day trip in summer?

Water-based valley days: the Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma waterfalls give you cool river walks and pools to swim in, an escape from the city heat an hour away. The mountains are also cooler than the plains, making an early Atlas hike pleasant even in summer.

Do I need to be experienced to hike the Atlas?

No. Guided days come in a range of difficulties, from gentle valley walks to a strenuous trek toward Toubkal. Tell us your fitness and experience and we'll grade the route accordingly — beginners and families are well catered for.

Are there outdoor options that aren't hiking?

Plenty: horse riding through the palm groves, mountain biking in the foothills, camel rides and walks in the Agafay desert, and river days in the valleys. You can spend days outdoors near Marrakech without a serious climb.

How far do I have to travel for real nature?

Not far. The Agafay desert is 40 minutes, the Ourika Valley about an hour, and the higher Atlas trailheads around 90 minutes. You can leave the city after breakfast and be on a trail or by a river well before lunch.
