A local guide leading hikers toward Toubkal's snow-dusted peaks
Distance: About 130 km round trip
Best season: April–November for walking; winter needs snow gear
Best for: Active travellers who want to actually walk in the mountains

Overview

Imlil is where Morocco's mountains get serious. This walnut-shaded village at 1,740 metres is the launch point for Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, and a day trip here swaps sightseeing for a genuine High Atlas walk. You won't summit in a day, but you will breathe thin mountain air, cross snow-melt streams and look up at the 4,000-metre wall that draws trekkers from around the world.

The drive climbs through Asni and the Kik plateau to Imlil in about 90 minutes to two hours. From the village a local mountain guide leads you up well-trodden mule paths — most often to Armed (Aroumd), the highest year-round village, set on a boulder-strewn plateau with Toubkal filling the skyline.

This is the most active of the standard Atlas day trips: expect two to four hours of walking on stony but non-technical paths, with steady ascents. Mules can carry bags or tired legs on many tours. It is hugely rewarding and completely doable for anyone reasonably fit, but it is a walk, not a stroll.

Lunch is usually a tagine in a Berber home or a simple terrace café in Imlil or Armed. In winter the upper paths can be snowbound and require proper gear, so the walking version runs best from spring through autumn.

Highlights

  • Imlil, the trailhead village at 1,740 m below Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m)
  • A guided walk to Armed, the highest permanently inhabited village
  • Walnut groves, apple orchards and rushing snow-melt streams
  • Optional mule support and a Berber home lunch

Frequently asked questions

Can you climb Mount Toubkal in a day from Marrakech?

No — summiting Toubkal (4,167 m) is a two-day trek with an overnight at the refuge. A day trip takes you to Imlil and up to Armed for the classic view of the peak, which is the sensible, rewarding day-trip version.

How hard is the Imlil day walk?

Moderate. The path to Armed and back is 2–3 hours of walking on stony mule tracks with steady ascents, at altitude. No scrambling or technical sections, but you should be comfortable on your feet and with some uphill.

Do I need a guide for Imlil?

For the village and the lower valley you can wander freely, but for the walk toward Toubkal a local mountain guide is strongly recommended and usually included — they know the paths, the weather and the safe turnaround points.

Can I do Imlil in winter?

Yes, but the upper paths can be snow-covered and icy from December to March, needing proper footwear or crampons. Many winter visitors keep to the village and lower valley, which is still beautiful under snow.
