Marrakech hits first-timers hard — the sensory overload of the medina, the attention from vendors, the labyrinth of alleys and the intense heat can be overwhelming if you arrive without a plan.

But with a few hours of orientation (ideally with a guide), some honest expectations and a short list of the things that actually matter, Marrakech becomes one of the most rewarding cities you will ever visit. Here is what you need to know.

What's included

Book a guide for Day 1

A 3-hour guided medina walk on your first morning transforms the trip. Your guide orients you, shows you the landmarks and teaches you how the souks work. After that, you can explore confidently alone.

Stay in the medina

A riad in the medina is the quintessential Marrakech experience — a hidden courtyard, roof terrace and traditional breakfast served by staff who know the neighbourhood.

Do one day trip

Marrakech is best in doses. After two days in the city, a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira gives you breathing room and perspective.

Eat at Jemaa el-Fnaa at night

The square's evening food stalls are chaotic, smoky and magnificent. Go with a guide or go bold — either way, eat the snail soup.

Get a hammam

A traditional hammam is not optional — it is a core Marrakech experience. Book a tourist-friendly one for your first time.

Common questions

How many days do I need in Marrakech?

Three to four days is the sweet spot. Day 1: guided medina walk and souks. Day 2: Majorelle, Bahia Palace and a rooftop sunset. Day 3: Atlas or Essaouira day trip. Day 4: hammam, cooking class and shopping.

Is it safe for first-timers?

Yes. The medina can feel intense but it is safe. The main risks are petty theft and scams (overcharging, fake guides). A real guide on Day 1 inoculates you against most of the common tricks.

What is the biggest mistake first-timers make?

Trying to do too much. Marrakech rewards slowing down — a long lunch, getting lost in a quiet alley, sitting on a rooftop with mint tea. The best moments are unplanned.

Should I learn any Arabic?

A few words help enormously. 'Shukran' (thank you), 'la shukran' (no thank you), 'bslama' (goodbye) and 'bezzaf' (too much — useful when haggling).
