Atlas Mountains Day Trip from Marrakech

Snow-capped peaks, Berber villages and cool mountain air — all within two hours of the city heat.

1.5-2 hours from Marrakech
Multiple valley options
Guided or self-paced
Traditional Berber lunch

The High Atlas Mountains rise directly south of Marrakech, and their villages, valleys and peaks are the most popular day trip destination from the city. In under two hours you go from the heat and noise of the medina to cool mountain air, terraced walnut groves and hospitality that feels centuries removed from tourism.

There are several different day trips into the Atlas, each with a different character. Choosing the right one depends on your fitness, interests and how much time you have.

What's included

Imlil & Toubkal base camp

The gateway to North Africa's highest peak (4,167m). A day trip takes you to Imlil village with an optional guided hike toward Toubkal base camp. Stunning scenery without a multi-day trek.

Ourika Valley

The closest and most accessible valley — 60 km south. Berber villages, Setti Fatma waterfalls and riverside restaurants.

Learn more →

Oukaimeden

Morocco's ski resort in winter (December-March) and a wildflower plateau in summer. At 2,600m it is significantly cooler than Marrakech.

Common questions

Which Atlas day trip is best?

For first-timers: the Three Valleys tour gives the best overview. For hikers: Imlil. For families: Ourika Valley. For photographers: Imlil or Tizi n'Test pass.

Do I need to be fit?

Not for a valley drive with short village walks. For Imlil hikes, moderate fitness is enough. Only the Toubkal ascent requires serious fitness and multiple days.

Is it cold in the mountains?

Even in summer, the mountains are 10-15°C cooler than Marrakech. Bring a light jacket. In winter, snow falls above 2,000m and it can be genuinely cold.

Can I combine the Atlas with the desert?

Not in one day — the desert (Agafay aside) is south of the mountains and requires overnight. But you can do an Atlas day trip one day and an Agafay sunset experience the next.
