Mountain Excursions from Marrakech

The High Atlas rises straight out of the plains south of Marrakech, and within an hour you can trade the city for snow-dusted peaks, terraced valleys and Berber villages where tea is still poured from a height. Here are the mountain days worth making.

The classic Atlas days

The High Atlas day is the all-rounder: a drive into the mountains, a village visit with mint tea, a walk to a waterfall and lunch with a view. The Three Valleys tour covers more ground — the Ourika, Oukaïmeden and Asni valleys — with short walks and photo stops, ideal for mixed-fitness groups.

Both are gentle, guided and back by evening, and both show you the Berber Atlas most visitors never see behind the postcard peaks.

Valleys, water and peaks

For green and cool, the Ourika Valley and its Setti Fatma waterfalls are the summer favourites — river walks and pools an hour from the heat. For a proper hike, the Imlil and Toubkal day takes you to the foot of North Africa's highest mountain.

An Atlas hiking day lets you set the level, from an easy village loop to a lung-testing climb, all with a guide who knows the trails and the villages.

Snow and high passes

In winter and spring, Oukaïmeden — North Africa's highest ski resort — brings snow within reach for a day, and even out of season it's a dramatic high-mountain drive.

Frequently asked questions

How far are the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech?

Close — the foothills and the Ourika Valley are about an hour away, and higher trailheads like Imlil around 90 minutes. You can leave after breakfast and be walking in the mountains well before lunch, then be back in the city for dinner.

Which mountain day trip is best for families or non-hikers?

The Three Valleys tour or a gentle High Atlas day — both mix short walks, village visits, tea and photo stops without hard climbing, so mixed-fitness groups and families do well. The Ourika Valley is also easy and has the bonus of a river to paddle in.

Can I climb Toubkal on a day trip?

Not the summit — Toubkal (4,167m) is a two-day trek with a mountain-refuge overnight. But a day trip to Imlil takes you to its foot for a rewarding valley hike with the peak on the horizon, which is enough of a taste for most visitors.

Is there snow in the Atlas near Marrakech?

Yes, in winter and into spring on the higher peaks. Oukaïmeden, North Africa's highest ski resort, is a day trip away and holds snow in season — a surreal contrast to the warm city an hour below. The peaks are often snow-capped and visible from Marrakech itself.

What should I bring on a mountain day?

Layers — the mountains are cooler than the city and the weather turns quickly — plus comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, water and some cash for lunch and village tea. In winter add a warm jacket, and for waterfall walks, grippy footwear.
