There are two ends of the spectrum. Neighbourhood public hammams are where locals go — cheap, communal, no-frills and authentic, where you bring your own kit or buy it at the door. At the other end sit private spa hammams in riads and hotels, where the same ritual is delivered one-to-one in a beautiful tiled room, with towels, robes and add-on massages.
The ritual itself is consistent: you sit in the steam to open your pores, are washed with savon beldi (a dark olive-oil soap), then scrubbed head to toe with a kessa glove that sloughs away the dead skin — the moment most people remember. A rhassoul clay mask, a rinse, and often an argan or almond-oil massage complete it.
For visitors, the private spa version is the easy, comfortable choice, and couples' rooms make it a lovely thing to do together. The adventurous can try a public hammam for the real, local experience. Either way you emerge relaxed, warm and with skin like silk.

What to expect
Expect the scrub to be thorough and firm — it is meant to be. You will see the dead skin come away, and your skin feels remarkably smooth afterwards.
