There are two classic Sahara destinations from Marrakech, and they're quite different. Zagora is closer — its modest dunes can be reached on a two-day, one-night tour, making it the choice when time is tight, though the sand is less spectacular. Merzouga, home to the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, is the postcard Sahara most people picture; it's further, needing three days and two nights, but the payoff is far greater. If you want the iconic big-dune experience, Merzouga is worth the extra day.

The journey and what you'll see

Getting there is part of the trip. The route crosses the High Atlas via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, then descends through the film-set kasbah of Aït Benhaddou (a UNESCO site), Ouarzazate (Morocco's 'Hollywood'), the Dades or Draa valleys with their palm groves and gorges, and on to the dunes. A good desert tour builds in these stops, so the long drive is broken up with genuine highlights rather than being a slog. At the dunes you swap the vehicle for a camel or 4x4 to reach a desert camp.

Tours range from budget shared minibuses to private 4x4s and luxury camps. Typically included are transport, a driver, accommodation en route and at a desert camp, a sunset camel trek into the dunes, dinner and breakfast at camp, and sometimes music around the fire under the stars.
