Overview
Telouet is one of Morocco's most atmospheric ruins — the mountain stronghold of the Glaoui, the pashas who ruled southern Morocco into the 1950s. From a plain, crumbling exterior you step into astonishing interiors of carved cedar, painted ceilings and glittering zellij tilework, slowly decaying in the mountain air. Off the main road and far less visited than Aït Ben Haddou, it rewards anyone drawn to faded grandeur and untold history.
The route climbs the Tizi n'Tichka pass before branching off the main road onto the old caravan track to Telouet. The village sits amid Berber hamlets and salt mines that were once the source of the Glaoui fortune, controlling the trade route between Marrakech and the Sahara.
The kasbah's plain, mud-walled shell gives no hint of what's inside: reception rooms lavished with intricate stucco, cedar ceilings, wrought-iron windows and walls of zellij, built by the finest craftsmen of the early 20th century. Much is unrestored and quietly falling apart, which only adds to the haunting atmosphere.
Telouet is often combined with Aït Ben Haddou by continuing along the beautiful Ounila Valley — a back road through red-earth villages, kasbahs and palm gardens that many find the scenic highlight of the day. On its own it is a quieter, more offbeat kasbah day than the classic Ouarzazate run.
